Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home; Saving the Whales

Star Trek IV - The Voyage Home (Two-Disc Special Collector's Edition)

Based just on the three previous Star Trek movies that I've seen I'm going to assume that during the flight home from dropping Spock off the crew of what use to be The Enterprise are going to get a little side tracked fighting off some other alien being. Although in the end I am sure things will end well for the crew. I think Kirk will manage to find a way to wiggle out of the situation he finds himself in and will ultimately become a greater hero than ever before.

After having watched the movie:
(Possible spoilers below)

I expected the movie to be about the voyage home and a lot less about saving the whales of the twenty-first century, which completely took me by surprise. I did though really enjoy watching the crew of The Enterprise travel back in time to San Fransico in the twenty-first century and trying to blend in. Watching Spock in so many of the situations he landed himself in was without a doubt one of my favorite parts of the movie.

As far as the whales are concerned though, I thought that was too far fetched. After I watched the movie I did end up watching a little bit of the commentary as well, and it was explained that because the previous movies always seemed to have a "bad guy" that a poor circumstance was the way to go this time around. I agree with the poor circumstance angle, but whales? I'm not sure that was the right direction, I certainly would have never gone with whales.

Final thoughts: I liked the movie enough; although it has to be said that the best Star Trek movie was most certainly Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan. It's almost as though the two movies which follow The Wrath of Khan slowly start to build up into this big snow ball which sooner rather than later just seems to get out of control by the third part of the trilogy and I'm wondering whales? Really?

Oh well. In the end, it was a great a mini-series and challenge to watch. I'm glad I've watched the movies and now I can't wait until I get to watch Trekkies!

As a big trekkie I couldn't agree more with your summary. I think IV was a good dose of ight-heartedness after II & III were more intense. The whales were far-fetched but really fit into the late sixites hippie movement that partially surrounded Star trek.

Now, whatever you do, NEVER watch Star Trek V. Skip it and watch VI some day.
