Drop Dead Fred

Drop Dead Fred, 1991

Drop Dead Fred

I can remember watching parts of this movie on TV and some of my friends talking about how much fun it was. In 1991 though I was just in kindergarden, so this movie managed to slip through my Animated Disney movie tunnel vision.

After having watched the movie:
(Possible spoilers below)

After watching the movie, and hearing some of the language in the movie I can't really say I'm surprised that my parents skipped over this movie when it hit the shelves in Blockbuster. Of course after watching the movie, I'm still not certain what audience they were really shooting here for. Maybe I managed to fall into a limbo, but I don't really have a lot of friends who talk about this movie as being one of their favorites from growing up either as teenagers or as children. I think this movie just got lost somewhere in the sea of Wayne's Worlds, Terminator II, City Slickers and Beauty and the Beast.

Final thoughts: I think the movie was a little too old for kids and a little childish for adults. Although it has managed to find its way into the hearts of some who now consider the movie a Cult Classic. I'd say, "sure, it makes sense that it would be a cult classic" it's just never going to be the first Cult Classic anyone is going to list as their favorite.

Fun to note though, according to Wikipedia: Universal acquired the rights to the movie with the intentions of remaking the film and casting none other than Russell Brand in the title role. Which I think casting Russell Brand, even though I find him incredibly irritating is genius. I think if the rumors are true, the remake could possibly outdo the original film and I much would have preferred watching the remake then the original movie.
